Oakland-based Disgust of Us's eponymous album is a pleasant collection emotional post-punk and alternative tracks. Most tracks feature refined female vocals, with the occasional appearance of a grittier male vocalist; the contrast made between the two stylings is effective. Unfortunately, the vocals are not as prominent in the mix as one would hope. Instrumentally, this album plays out like standard indie alternative, but allows for some refreshing experimentation on arrangement and feel. Reminiscient of Sunny Day Real Estate's "Diary" or Silversun Pickups. FCC warnings on tracks 2 and 6.
01. (3:22) * Skin and Bones: Nice bass lines and female vocals. Fun listen!
02. (2:43) [FCC WARNING] Monstrous: Darker pop churn with variations on dynamics. Chorus features male and female melodies and counters.
04. (4:42) * Dearly Departed: Quiet, clean song punctuated with bouts of overdriven intensity.
03. (3:13) * Tick Tock: An apt name, the groove moves like a ticking wall clock. Cool groove for the verses. Vocals alternate between singers.
05. (5:49) Homemade Haircuts: Angsty track with screaming towards the end.
06. (3:20) [FCC WARNING] Piss in the Snow: Alternates between angry marching feel and upbeat punk sections.
07. (4:08) Clammy Calm: Lo-fi male and pristine female vocals.
08. (2:16) Regret Regard: Acoustic guitars and vocals. Simple and effective. 6 seconds of silence at the end.
