Album Review

Start to finish take on Pink Floyd’s epic. This stays incredibly true to the exact form of the original, in structure for sure and in a few places to the note. Otherwise, the versions certainly stray, inject what you might expect from the weirdness of the Lips augmented by that of Rollins and Peaches. They’ve raised the element of funkiness a notch which is brilliant (cuz anyone who loves Floyd knows they relied on a buried element of funk in a lot of their music). As near as I can tell Henry Rollins contributes only the spoken word parts from the originals and they aren’t mysteriously buried in the mix this time. Peaches steals the show on The Great Gig in the Sky. There’s only two (arguably one) FCC (see notes below) and they are easily edited out on the fly. I would suggest playing the whole thing in its entirety, or at least all of side one (tracks 1-4) as this is the quitessential “concept album”, tracks bleed together etc. This is incredibly good IMHO, I would highlight all tracks if that wasn’t a useless gesture.

1) speak to me/breathe: FCC – the first line appears 23 seconds in, Rollins says “I’ve been mad for fucking years…” its very easily edited out if you know its comg, the version is an urgent rocker with soaring feedback distortion guitar replacing the echoey slide in the orginal
2) cool funky bassline electrorock chaos leads to full-on emergency alarm (in place of ringing alarm clocks)
3) tick tocks replaced with a capela of coughs and breathing, then hair raising, chill evoking take on “Time”
4) this one is almost as true to the original as any, just beautiful, fucking PEACHES TAKES OFF!!!
5) FCC?: noisey synth introduces wah wah’ed bassline to Money, all weird and electo funkified DON’T FORGET – the line “do goody good bullsh*t” (is that even an FCC anymore, i.e. does The Bone or KFOG even bleep it out?)
6) like track 4, this one comes close to being a “cover”, very beautiful, chill
7) funkified, super cool
8) chill then supercharged noise bursts and epic contrasts fill the air, if you play one track this might be it!!
9) double timed slow triplet take, with wah wah abounding, monumental nod to one of the best most monumental albums ever
