Best of Deep Root
Reviewed by Sadie O., 8/20/10
Roots Rock Reggae and dub from the UK – a best of comp of previously vinyl releases from the late 90’s. All tracks either awesome or KILLER. DUBWISE!
1. 4:18 ***echo-laden spoken intro, then mid-tempo dubby stepping razor skank with horn section, reverby male vocals.
2. 3:58 ****the dub – even dubbier, thick and gooey.
3. 4:01 ****pretty female singing intro, then slow, blatty skank with melodica.
4. 4:02 ***the dub. Gets gooeyer as it goes.
5. 3:30 ***pretty uptempo bubble with syndrum, female harmonies.
6. 3:26 ****ferocious dub. The syndrum turned dangerous on us.
7. 3:40 ****big sound, swingy stepping razor skank with big horn section. Pretty male vocals.
8. 4:46 *****just the big horn section for the intro (nice!), then killer dub. Whooo!
9. 3:48 ****huge horns intro, big drums, and Luciano’s vocals. Damn! What more do you want?
10. 5:12 ****we want the dub! Yay!
11. 6:40 ***swingy syncopation, rather light and soulful vocals, but with some quirky stylings.
12. 4:23 ****very, very dubby, quirky. Gets the great syncopation after 30 seconds.
13. 4:00 *****goofy keyboard intro, rather uptempo dancehall skank, Michael Rose in full effect. Some very skewed instrumental stuff going on.
14. 4:02 ****bit of BBC news broadcast, then the dub.
15. 3:11 *****4/4 skank with keyboards, fine female harmonies. Quite dubby, and this isn’t even the dub…
16. 3:02 *****SOOOOO dubby… I’m getting a contact high…
