GERI ALLEN & TIMELINE: Live
Motéma, 2010
MODERN JAZZ – This unique project from creative pianist Geri Allen put the focus squarely on rhythm: in addition to a powerhouse drummer she also uses a tap dancer with some astounding skills. It’s hard-hitting and fun – you can tell they’re all enjoying it – but Allen broadens the palette, her piano ranging from lush beauty to tough, repetitive riffing.
Geri Allen - piano
Kenny Davis - bass
Kassa Overall - drums
Maurice Chestnut - tap percussion
Try any track; they’re all great. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 7
1. 15:53 – thrilling drum/tap dialogue takes center stage; piano has a soaring solo & knotty breaks, but also does a lot of straight riffing
2. 04:47 – striding urban groove, bold piano, tap is well integrated with the trio
3. 17:12 – lush intro, quiet contemplation, open drums; breaks out for uptempo roll, softens for bass & piano solos, becomes a ballad in last section
4. 03:37 – bright, circular melody, oddball piano, good tap action, crazy ending
5. 12:35 – beautiful solo piano daydream, very quiet shuffling perc sneaks in, second half a relatively straight, upbeat ballad with warm soloing
6. 09:53 – speedy Charlie Parker bop: piano/drums trade off, then drums/tap
7. 06:38 – celebratory stomp: happy piano, lots of tap, swells with pride
