REGINA CARTER: Reverse Thread
E1 Music, 2010
WORLD JAZZ – The acclaimed violinist is onto something interesting here, adding accordion and/or kora for a countrified, Africanized folk-jazz sound. Maybe a little too composed at times, but it has a delicious sound: soothing melodies, precise playing, lightly bouncing rhythms.
Regina Carter - violin
Yacouba Sissoko - kora
Will Holshouser, Gary Versace - accordion
Adam Rogers - guitar
Mamadou Ba - electric bass
Chris Lightcap - acoustic bass
Alvester Garnett - drums, percussion
All nice… Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 8, 10
1. 4:49 – perky, folksy lilt with accordion; violin & guitar take breezy solos
2. 5:59 – rolling African sound with quick-skittering kora: very nice violin break
3. 5:52 – delicate pitter-patter melody, with a bittersweet air
4. 3:56 – upbeat, happy little stomp: accordion shadows violin, good drums
5. 5:27 – nostalgic but sexy: a secret dance in the Cuban night; odd guitar solo
6. 0:31 – solo kora intro to…
7. 6:04 – quiet & slow: walking rhythm, contemplative and rather sad
8. 3:57 – uptempo reel: jaunty violin, guitar & accordion dance, handclaps
9. 6:15 – exotic touch, flows with a gently rocking rhythm
10. 4:07 – slow hymn into a nice folksy lope with a touch of reggae
11. 5:52 – chugging, rhythmic: kora, accordion all have good solos
12. 4:31 – quiet, careful walk: softly padding bass, suspended accordion; rises
