CHRIS LIGHTCAP’S BIGMOUTH: Deluxe Clean Feed, 2010 MODERN JAZZ – Lightcap, a very fine bassist indeed, leads an exceptional band through eight original compositions which tend to rise up from a moody, introspective feel on solid, catchy rhythms. Sax men Chris Cheek and Tony Malaby present a supple double-tenor front that can get edgy (2,6,8), but it’s Craig Taborn’s keys and Gerald Cleaver’s enveloping drums that really make Lightcap’s music move and shine. All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 1. 8:29 – catchy midtempo groove rides dirty electric piano, cool drumming 2. 9:56 – relaxed, dreamy, drifting: really nice sax & bass solos, heats up late 3. 7:08 – nice riffing intro! slow 3-sax lines, popping solos over a great rhythm 4. 5:44 – slow and floating, but drums & bass boil under the calm surface 5. 6:29 – chewy groove under crossing/looping melody lines; acoustic piano 6. 6:19 – off-kilter intro, gradually loses its balance, slides into improv anxiety 7. 8:01 – tense intro, winding melody, rolling rhythm: solos flutter & question 8. 4:19 – moaning melody, thickets of fuzzed bass, busy drums, horns get hot [ Fo ] 09/11/10 | ||
