REBECCA MARTIN: When I Was Long Ago
Sunnyside, 2010

JAZZ VOCALS – Shadowy and mysterious: backed only by bass and saxophone, singer Rebecca Martin’s distinctive, raspy voice calls out in wide-open spaces, an odd tone delivered with a creak and a moan, all aching fragility and cracked, dusty mirrors. No, it isn’t exactly cheery, but Martin is an excellent, enigmatic stylist; plumbing the murkiest depths of these old standards and making them sound, if not new, then definitely much darker and less familiar. Great work all around.

Rebecca Martin: vocals
Larry Grenadier: bass
Bill McHenry: saxophones

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 11

1. 4:09 – a slow, melancholy ache
2. 5:49 – loping pace, wistful tone
3. 5:42 – sparse intro, then relaxed
4. 4:37 – haunting bass & sax here
5. 0:36 – sweet, with child; intro to…
6. 2:57 – a deep ache, voc+bass
7. 4:50 – gorgeous sax, soft vocal
8. 2:54 – duo, easy strolling pace
9. 5:11 – loose, relaxed & balmy
10. 4:03 – (relatively) upbeat swing
11. 5:22 – a nice folksy/bluesy stroll
