MASON BROTHERS: Two Sides, One Story Archival, 2010 MAINSTREAM JAZZ – British-born brothers Brad and Elliot Mason have each forged solid careers as in-demand horn sidemen; now they join forces as co-leaders for a set of interesting original tunes, backed by a first-call band. A bit subdued, but pretty good straightahead stuff. Brad Mason - trumpet, flugelhorn Elliot Mason - trombone, bass trumpet Antonio Sanchez - drums Scott Colley - bass David Kikoski - piano Chris Potter - saxophone Joe Locke - vibraphone Tim Miller - guitar Fo’s Picks: 4, 5, 7, 8 1. 9:30 – serious midtempo groove with a fluid, casual round of solos 2. 8:51 – “Giant Steps” inverted: sneaks in sideways, solos warm up gradually 3. 7:36 – darker tone: a pensive ballad contrasts with cold, stony themes 4. 8:30 – sinister touch: guitar scurries, trombone walks, the others trade off 5. 9:10 – relaxed and shadowy with sweet vibraphone; calm horn interweaving 6. 5:58 – swinging midtempo: lively trumpet, calmer trombone, nice bass solo 7. 10:05 – easygoing glide, horn solos get speedy and inquisitive, late surge 8. 8:30 – winding intro, then jumps: quick solos passed around like hot potato [ Fo ] 10/02/10 |
