SCOTT AMENDOLA TRIO: Lift
Sazi, 2010

POSTMODERN JAZZ – Comfortable in straight-jazz, avant-garde, rock or full-on noise settings, this pared-down version of Bay Area drummer Scott Amendola’s band has been working as a trio for a couple of years, but this is their first release. They keep things pretty accessible, but still manage to blend in most of those styles for a sound like no other group. Common ground for fans of normal and weird jazz.

Jeff Parker : guitar
John Shifflett : bass
Scott Amendola : drums

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6

1. 6:30 – big drum intro, then easygoing melodic groove: sinuous guitar solo
2. 7:45 – tweaked-out electronics set up cool breezy groove; slows way down
3. 7:26 – big fat bass here: a catchy, relaxed guitar stroll with nice drums
4. 3:40 – metal-jazz: fuzz guitar, bashing drums; slow, but freaks out in middle
5. 5:39 – calming intro, then the trio slouches along, kind of a lazy/folksy feel
6. 6:54 – feel-good blues bounce, catchy tune, greasy guitar goes for a stroll
7. 4:13 – spy-rock: stomping drums, reverb guitar, mysterioso bass
8. 4:28 – quiet electronics/bell sounds and sweet guitar for a twisted lullaby
