DOMENIC LANDOLF: New Brighton Pirouet, 2010 MODERN JAZZ – Swiss reed player fronts an agile trio with a nice balance between solid rhythmic playing, improvisational freedom and emotive depth. Landolf’s twisty style fits very nicely with Patrice Moret’s sturdy bass sound and Dejan Terzic’s shape-shifting drums. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 9 1. 7:33 – somewhat moody midtempo; rolling rhythm, questioning saxophone 2. 1:12 – speedy drums, gusty improvisational winds 3. 3:41 – gentle bass clarinet, calm bass and light, shifting drums 4. 4:25 – great trio sound on this one, chewy groove gradually falls apart 5. 4:00 – flute wanders in percussion atmosphere: starts spooky, settles down 6. 6:37 – oddball drums make tricky obstacle course for sax; good bass solo 7. 0:58 – free improv interlude, skritchy and alien 8. 4:21 – bass mulls and clarinet philosophizes over quiet drum patter 9. 4:27 – bass intro, develops into a lovely tune with flute & glockenspiel 10. 2:43 – oblique improv falls into a sort of moaning march 11. 2:39 – glides easily, bass shadows sax, cool drum cycle 12. 4:24 – upbeat sax threads thru busy drums, references “Eleanor Rigby” 13. 2:52 – slow standard, sax warbles high over dragging rhythm section [ Fo ] 10/23/10 | ||
