THE RENT: Musique de Steve Lacy Ambiances Magnetiques, 2010 AVANT-GARDE – Canadian two-horn quartet + vocals, paying tribute to (you guessed it) Steve Lacy. This is agile, frisky stuff: they really dig into the music without making museum pieces out of it. The vocals and soprano sax generally work in unison for an odd effect. FCC clean. Susanna Hood : vocals Kyle Brenders : soprano sax Scott Thomson : trombone Wes Neal : bass Nick Fraser : drums All tracks fun! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 1. 4:11 – goofy bounce, a lively swing with French vox 2. 4:52 – oddball walk & cool poem; sneaky trombone gets weird, bass break 3. 5:42 – instrumental: perky theme; sax solo goes out, trombone gets small 4. 13:20 – slow suite: glum theme, supercool sax/drum interlude; twisting vocals lead into not-a-march, under-the-radar glide, acrobatic groan 5. 2:45 – quick surrealist vox & jolly marching beat, minimalist drum solo 6. 7:47 – instrumental: slumps along nicely; drunken trombone, casual bass 7. 3:22 – uptempo instrumental: hops in circles, busy horn improv, drum solo 8. 5:28 – weird poem from perspective of a yak; crazy groaning vocal improv 9. 7:51 – two poems: spinning bounce in first half; switches to chugging march [ Fo ] 11/13/10 | ||
