GREG LEWIS: Organ Monk
self-released, 2010

ORGAN JAZZ – Hammond B3 player takes on a set of Thelonious Monk tunes. Lewis gets Monk’s quirky sense of harmony and time, and he’s not afraid to get weird (especially in the intros), but he’s also a funky player who can get things grooving. Cindy Blackman’s restless drumming adds some extra bite, but guitarist Ron Jackson smoothes it all out. Bonus points for picking some of Monk’s less obvious tunes.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 15

2. 3:56 – mysterious intro, solo percolation, then a happy little drive with drums
3. 5:06 – bizarre scattered intro & ending, with a hot, spiky swing in between
4. 4:22 – nice lazy lope: guitar chills out, drums apply gentle pressure
5. 4:51 – goofy repetitive bounce; a snappy uptempo glide, good drums
8. 4:33 – squirrelly melody, an upbeat stroll with winking solos for all
9. 5:15 – sneaky solo intro, then organ romps over slow steady groove
15. 4:27 – original, built on repetitive riff, balances aloofness & a good time
