Lupon by Y La Bamba

Lupon is the debut album from Y La Bamba, a 5 member band from Portlant, OR. Luzelana Mendoza's vocals dominate this album that has been described as having a "delicate folk pop quality."

Mendoza's voice has a haunting, old warm quality that lulls you at first. But then when you begin to listen to the lyrics you realize that there is a deep personal note to them. "Reserved sobriety" is how one reviewer described the album and I guess that is a good way to put it.

Try 2, 6, 7,8 and 9.

1. You get lulled by the voice for the first few seconds, but when you listen to the lyrics it is a pretty sad song. Slow.
2. More of an upbeat tune. Sad lyrics.
3. Slow. Reflective undertone.
4. Slow with a soaring chorus. Listen to the guitar in this piece.
5. Slow.
6. This is the track that the band is best known for. It has shades of upbeat tone. The song is again influenced by a personal event in the singer's life. This time it is the scent of the Juniper trees from her childhood days that is supposed to have inspired this number. Nice.
7. The opening accordion notes remind you of France and Italy. Got a bit of a smokey cafe feel to the song.
8. Like the way it opens. May I be bold enough to say that I detected an upbeat element here?
9. Opening notes remind you of howling winds and cold. Sad words. Strangely compelling tune.
10. The only Spanish number. The singer's voice dominates here. Slow.
11. Slow. Contemplative note.
