Addic Ted - Patty Cake

reviewed by tony echo - 1/5/11

33rpm

Super lo-fi, genre-bending... psyche-alt-country? rockabilly? trippy and fun... recommended for: sunday hangover afternoons, violent cartoons, oompa loompa dance parties.

Loved and highly recommend both sides.

side a

patty cake
mid-fast, upbeat, ~4:15
lightly distorted m vox, melodic if off-key delivery, with hilarious non-sensical lyrics: "patty cake or patty hearst, what do you think is worst". cheesy drum machine beats and keys- sounds like they pressed the "bossa nova" button on a cheap 80s casio keyboard for the beat, then pressed "organ" and started playing. occasional guitar loop and distorted whine played to full effect.

side b

i don't mind
mid-fast, ~ 3:00
this is a more "polished" piece. m vox like... the guy from echo and the bunnymen? robert smith? cartoonish background vox - "i don't mind, i don't mind, i don't mind, i don't mind". elec guitar is more prominent, "old-west/rodeo" sound, with nice solo and buildup toward the end. real drummer-yes!

ufc
fast? ~0:55
vox interplay - twisted conversation between spoken m vox (similar to i don't mind) and sung falsetto. twisted, dark lyrics.
is that an "organ" or sampled vox in the background? can't tell!
effects: barking dogs come in halfway, sound like they're tearing the falsetto person to shreds, you hear them screaming
simple, throbbing beat that would be annoying in other contexts but awesome here, degenerates and sputters out at the end.
the awesomeness is over before it begins, sadly
