KERMIT RUFFINS: Happy Talk Basin Street, 2010 NEW ORLEANS JAZZ – Gotta love Kermit Ruffins. You always know what you’re gonna get with him: a good-time atmosphere, some peppy trumpet work and a lot of very silly vocals. This disc veers from excellent to awful, with a typically quirky selection of music including some real gems and two of the most annoying show tunes ever written. Fo’s Picks: 3, 10, 12… maybe 2, 8, 9 1. 5:18 – happy New Orleans strut: some great clarinet, short solos all around 2. 3:41 – big band swings ‘n’ glides, nice little vocal & trumpet solo 3. 3:34 – perky, bluesy Sam Cooke big-band shuffle/stomp 4. 3:53 – Parisian romance, done Louis Armstrong style… slow, kinda campy 5. 5:20 – “South Pacific” tune as second line march… goofy voc but nice solos 6. 9:11 – Latin-jazz flavor for “Wizard of Oz” classic: kind of weird, but it works 7. 4:27 – argh… kids!!! And nobody but Sinatra has ever made this song work 8. 5:43 – fun bounce: an entertaining bit of Tremé fluff with joyous solos 9. 2:58 – speedy big band: rushed vocal and some quick-hit solos 10. 7:47 – really nice stroll through a 1920s standard; warm and just perfect 11. 3:57 – 1960s pop hit with big band… breezy music, really strained vocals 12. 6:38 – bluesy drag, an ode to New Orleans: nice guitar & trumpet solos [ Fo ] 11/13/10 | ||
