Midlake / “Fortune EP” / Bella Union

Alternate and live versions of previously/concurrently released tracks. Solid indie rock, though to give Midlake the same ubiquitous label as other “indie rockers” is not right. The sounds are mature and great, these guys know what they’re doing. Tenor, forlorn male vocals, sounds a lot like Andrew Bird at times, multitude of instruments (guitars, pianos, woodwinds...) Most songs are pretty slow/sad on this one, and don’t be fooled by the “live” descriptor - these must have been polished live-in-studio recordings. The slowness gets a bit repetitive, but it’s all really great in general in the vein of sad lush indie rock, especially if you’re just picking one track to play on air.

Favorite tracks: 2, 6

1. 2:48 Midtempo, pleasing, standard IR. Nice full sound.
2. * 3:20 Slower beat, great vocal harmonies, melancholy guitar/sound. Really great!
3. 4:31 Slow, has a sad love story in the woods, Greensleeves-y feel to it.
4. 5:34 Slow, a bit of a nondescript melody, but it’s pretty.
5. 4:15 Slow/mid, similar to others - lots of instruments, sad, pretty.
6. * 3:52 Slow/mid, simple guitars, woodwind, beautiful vocal harmonies, great!! Basically the same 2-chord melody throughout (except ending), but a great one!
