MARY STALLINGS: Dream
HighNote, 2010

JAZZ VOCALS – San Francisco singer Mary Stallings is a gem, with a classic jazz voice and a great sense of pacing. She pairs up here with pianist Eric Reed, whose impeccable, versatile playing fits like a glove.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11

1. 4:55 – brooding intro, then kicks into a weighty swing groove
2. 5:20 – standard played as a slow ballad: soulful vocal & gentle piano
3. 4:43 – oooh… hushed drums into haunting ballad, very strong vocals
4. 4:05 – jaunty, tick-tock swing; soulful vocal duet w/ Adriana Evans
5. 2:43 – old-fashioned saloon piano walk, upbeat vocal
6. 5:58 – sophisticated ballad; drawn out vocal phrasing & delicate piano
7. 3:09 – rolling uptempo, a solid swinger with nice piano break
8. 3:34 – relaxed Latin-tinged ballad: romantic vocal, gentle swing, fades out
9. 4:59 – sneaky r&b feel here, shifts midway through to a broader swing
10. 1:12 – sweet little vocal/bass duet, wish there were more of it…
11. 7:39 – slow, haunting with very unusual winding melody; good version of it
