HENRY THREADGILL & ZOOID: This Brings Us To, Vol. 2
Pi, 2010
AVANT-GARDE – Another great recording from Threadgill’s unique Zooid quintet, which employs a truly seamless balance of composition and improvisation: each musician roams freely but must stay within a strict framework, interacting via Threadgill’s musical language. The music is highly melodic yet impossible to pin down, dense yet entirely fluid. All the musicians are in top form. An excellent album.
Henry Threadgill : flute, alto saxophone
Liberty Ellman : guitar
Jose Davila: trombone, tuba
Stomu Takeishi: bass guitar
Elliot Humberto Kavee: drums
All very good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4
1. 10:04 – straining anticipation: shape-shifting melodies over steady drum patter; HT excellent on flute, strong trombone & cool guitar
2. 6:30 – slower and lumpier: guitar & bass out front; remarkable bass solo
3. 8:08 – brisk tempo: guitar & flute really shine here, energy rises gradually
4. 11:29 – oblique and dragging, drops way down for minimalist sax solo, then bass leads a slow uphill march; ends with a strong, striding feel
5. 7:16 – chugging tempo, brash sax phrases slash across melodic thickets
