SCANNER & THE POSTMODERN JAZZ QUARTET: Blink of an Eye Thirsty Ear, 2010 AVANT-JAZZTRONICA Interesting, adventurous blend: Electronic maestro Scanner meets a jazz aesthetic supposedly inspired by the ultra-elegant 1950s Modern Jazz Quartet, but reinvented for the new century with idiosyncratic players like Matthew Shipp (piano) and Khan Jamal (vibes). Disorienting collisions and moody atmospheres. It isn’t always a comfortable fit, but comfort isn’t really the goal here. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 1. 6:10 – cinematic sound: stringlike swirls, tweaky jabs, repeating piano 2. 5:24 – riff-based Duke Ellington tune spun on its head and turned inside out 3. 4:01 – nostalgic solo piano wanders in an ambient soundscape 4. 4:12 – amorphous blob: calm jazz improv lost in a creepy electronic misama 5. 4:02 – relatively straight jazz groove is gradually consumed by electronics 6. 3:47 – frantic bass, speedy vibes, electronic chatter & synth wash 7. 3:38 – heavy electronic rhythm, lonely piano chords echo in the middle 8. 4:48 – strong jazz spiral vs. crunchy bass noises & sound effects 9. 4:24 – wind blows, blustery vibes & piano buried in effects, clicking noises 10. 4:37 – hard dance groove here: Scanner in control, piano/vibes underneath [ Fo ] 12/19/10 | ||
