ANNA WEBBER: Third Floor People
Nowt, 2010
AVANT-JAZZ – Flutist/saxophonist Anna Webber alternates between two quartets on her debut release as a leader, merging the divergent musical spirits of New York and Montreal: one tense and spiky, the other more fluid and open. Webber bridges the two with assured playing and a fearless, edgy compositional style. She’s one to watch.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9
1. 2:32 – slow, curving melody; harsh, gritty guitar rises up and takes over
2. 5:20 – uptempo rockin’… tight flute & trumpet, overflowing drums & guitar
3. 7:44 – moody melody dragged over hard rhythm; calms for sax/guitar solos
4. 10:17 – percolation & whiny sax, builds up energy, but drifts into a vast, empty space after 4 minutes… calm exploration the rest of the way
5. 7:02 – laid-back & folksy over flute pattern, crests, ebbs, flute solo warps it
6. 5:00 – oblique chugging, almost catchy, jumps into rock as guitar takes off
7. 3:55 – angular flute into scribbly free jazz; slows for trumpet, jumps back
8. 6:51 – intriguing melody, steady drums; drifts into freedom, then surges
9. 7:24 – brooding unison melody; thoughtful trumpet, haunted flute solo
10. 7:35 – jerky rhythm, horns orbit each other, sax & guitar wriggle away
11. 3:15 – same melody as #1, but it maintains a calmer feel
