WIDE HIVE PLAYERS: Players II Guitar
Wide Hive, 2010
MODERN / SOUL JAZZ – This one sneaks up on you. Bay Area quartet drawn from the Wide Hive Records stable teams up with a rotating cast of jazz guitar heroes. With overdubs, they beef up to a much larger group sound, full of soul and delectably chewy grooves. But they also get into fusion and some very modern-sounding spaces. Some really good tracks here.
Barry Finnerty, Harvey Mandel, Calvin Keys, Larry Coryell, Luke Westbrook : guitars
Thomas McCree : drums, organ
Matt Montgomery : bass, piano, keyboard
Mike Rinta : trombone
Doug Rowan : saxophones
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 12
1. 3:38 – midtempo: simple melody, mysterious vibe; contemplative guitar
2. 3:27 – funky horns & organ, guitar gets bluesy, trombone adds grease
3. 5:46 – streetwise r&b/blues, catchy and anthemic; guitar really sings… nice!
4. 4:25 – very modern: cool vibe, good pickin’ over a weird skip-beat rhythm
5. 3:06 – striding groove, interesting mix of hard blues-rock and modern jazz
6. 3:57 – modernist fusion: nifty theme, cool piano chords, winding guitar solo
7. 5:41 – uptempo gliding rhythm, big heroic horns, cool-toned guitar soars
8. 3:28 – hard soul stride with organ: guitar lays it down
9. 4:35 – a hint of dub/reggae in this late-night crawl, bluesy guitar & big horns
10. 5:19 – guitar winds through jabbing horns and keyboard mazes
11. 4:21 – builds up to a sort of spy-jazz riff over fast drums, guitar glides
12. 5:04 - uptempo, sounds like a vocal tune, tight horns & keys, wailing guitar
