LOU GRASSI PO BAND: Live at the Knitting Factory, Vol. 1
Porter, 2010
FREE JAZZ – Recorded in 2000, this live acoustic sextet goes way out with concentrated energy and explosive release in the full-ensemble passages, while the individual solos tend to take a much more subtle, cerebral approach. It’s an impressive set, not for the faint of heart.
Lou Grassi : drums
Marshall Allen : alto sax, flute
Paul Smoker : trumpet
Steve Swell : trombone
Perry Robinson : clarinet
Wilber Morris : bass
1. 23:26 – dark jungle atmosphere: starts open, grows dense: ensemble chaos alternates with solos as horns chatter, moan, shout over deep rumbling drums; lengthy bass break halfway in, then quieter improv
2. 13:20 – very quiet & relaxed, drifts up from nowhere: melodic sax wanders over slow dissonance, flute & trumpet meander in near-silence, but it expands into cacophony over the last 5 minutes
3. 23:17 – quiet squeaks for first 3 minutes, then sprawls outward with a brash, two-note moan; sour bass ruminations, sax reaches for the upper atmosphere as drums power up; trombone brays methodically over chugging thump, sextet hits full strength, heavy drums bring it home
