Album Review

Trombonist Luis Bonilla leads a quintet playing all his original compositions on his fifth album. Ivan Renta, tenor sax, is featured prominently throughout. The two trade solos and often play together. The rhythm section is bass, drums, and keyboardist (on acoustic piano, electric piano, & organ). Much of this sounds very “composed” rather than improvised.

No FCC issues. All instrumental.

1. Slow-fast-slow. Starts soft & lyrical w elec piano & sax. A bit easy listening. Trombone takes over for fast, straight-ahead jazz section. Then return to slow and spacey. (7:14)
2. ** Opens with mid-tempo piano backed by bass & drums. Sax & trombone state a theme; trombone takes off with it. These two spin ‘round each other getting ever wilder. (6:52)
3. * Slow and bluesy with a swinging, ambiguous beat. Fine ensemble playing. (7:25)
4. * Mid-tempo nightclub cool. Bit of samba feel in places. (4:59)
5. ** Quick tempo. Much more improvisational. Piano is featured nicely. (4:47)
6. * Quite slow. Pretty trombone & sax lines backed by church-like organ. Peaceful. (7:18)
7. Slow and a bit strange. It searches around but never quite finds its way. (7:54)
8. Old fashioned, strip-club blues. Solos on trombone and Hammond organ. (7:15)
