Hooked!

Jazzy, loungey, Latin stylings from the New York raised Woodward, Hooked! is a great collection of mixed cover and original songs. She sings Hoagy Carmichael, Peggy Lee and Nellie McKay (who also accompanies her on backing vocals), so it has those sounds, but also a lot of her own, for lack of perhaps a better description, jazz songs. Lots of instrumentation, some male backing vocals some really fun songs. No FCC’s.

1. *(3:55) Mid / Fast. Kick-drum start, driving as all get-out. Horns, bass, drums, guitar...Slower interlude. Song about losing her man.
2. *(4:06) Mid. Peggy Lee song done with some great percussion, lending itself to a Latin flair, and cool backing male vocals. Start / stop phrases. Really dreamy, moody and fun.
3. (4:09) Slow / Mid. Sparse and slow, a breakup song. Large string section, picked guitar.
4. *(4:16) Mid / Fast. Originally done by Louis Prima, this version is upbeat, jazzy, playful and fun. Killer horns, handclaps, great jazzy guitar. It’s a late-night, raucous, rollicking ride.
5. (3:36) Mid. Penned by and backing vocals by Nellie McKay. Plodding beat with guitar, bass, drums, swirling organ. Poppy and peppy.
6. (3:59) Slow / Mid. Piano predominant, song about her wanting babies. A bit playful with the lyrics, with a great last line. Gets loud and dramatic, then quieter.
7. (4:37) Slow / Mid. Cool glockenspiel with drums and bass. Song about getting over a relationship.
8. *(4:01) Mid. Loungey with guitar, horns, drums, piano. Great sultry vocals, plodding beat.
9. *(3:48) Slow / Mid. Great instrumentation of accordion, tuba, trombone, drums, guitar, bass, piano. Very theatrical and catchy.
10. (3:51) Slow / Mid. Easy-paced, jazzy and cool delivery.
11. (3:32) Slow. Sparse with piano, brushes on the drums, strings. Kind of a cinematic take.
12. (2:33) Slow / Mid. Hoagy Carmichael classic with fingersnaps and male backing vocals. Almost a whispered vocal delivery.
