DAVID COOK: Pathway
BJU, 2010

MODERN JAZZ – Highly appealing trio set from pianist David Cook, his debut as a leader but doesn’t sound like it. Many of the tunes have clearly delineated subsections, contrasting moods and approaches. There are jaunty, riffing strolls and gently soaring ballads, all of which show off Cook’s elegant touch and tight band very nicely.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7

1. 7:40 – catchy 3/4 blues pulse: methodical piano solo, agile bass, solid beat
2. 6:09 – cute, lively melody: piano hops cheerily, strolling bass & perky drums
3. 9:44 – slow billowing intro, then glides & questions; comes alive in the solos
4. 4:15 – sweet, warm, waltzing tune: dances along with lovely poise
5. 5:22 – slow, exotic ballad: drifts through hazy mystery and hushed romance
6. 4:28 – solo piano: beautiful, stately version of spiritual Ellington classic
7. 5:45 – bright boppin’ tune: a straight-up burner with a joyous sound
8. 5:43 – lightly grooving tune: mostly on cruise control, but blossoms briefly
9. 8:21 – relaxed, soulful, optimistic: serene bass solo, gently twisting piano
