3 CD set, a collection of music released over the span of 1976-2010 on such great labels as Six Degrees, Cuneiform, Ryko, ECM: Guitar playing with a lot of tabla and Eastern influences very much in the vein of John McLaughlin/Shakti later King Crimson, and bordering on jazz. All instrumental besides some female vocalizations, soaring. Pretty and heady stuff that would fit in amongst noise and experimental as well as a World or Jazz set. Some of it is “smooth” and others are blasting prog jazz stylings that are impressive and some is far along the avant/experimental/noise spectrum (!) and a lot is undeniably World. CDs have 14-19 tracks each (!) where CD1 concentrates on acoustic guitar, CD2 electric, brings to mind all the greats along with experimentalists Saqquara Dogs and CD3 is genuine avante/experimentalism. Theres a lot in here and I encourage you to explore this stuff. I’ve commented on what I felt were highlights of the set in lieu of a complete unwieldy track by track. CD1: acoustic guitar 1) percussive chill, eastern feel with McLaughlin coming to mind 2) upbeat, denser with tabla etc, faster picking 3) take on Led Zeppelin’s “black mountain side”, the guitar is almost to the T, the tone is slower and smoother 5) soaring fem vocs 7, 10,11) very lovely and chill 16) solo, nice CD2: electric guitar 1) builds in intensity, some searing guitar and pounding percussion 3) smokin’ 4) slower more mindful, supercool guitar 11) some really nice prog, super stylin’ CD3: experimental, avante and World (all dreamy lovely stuff) 1) long and pretty 10-16) features eastern female vocals and other, very world 19) string heavy, almost folky but really pleasant | ||
