Devotchka is back with its orchestras, epic echo-y vocals, many-layered-ness, hints of most of your favorite indie bands (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Clap Your Hands, Beirut, etc.) and innovative and world music-like sound. If you haven’t heard of them, but you’ve seen Little Miss Sunshine, you have heard them. Either way, check ‘em out. No FCCs.
Recommended tracks: 2, 7, 10
1. Swirling orchestral beginning, drums come in w/ haunting piano line and build up to vocals. Romantic, swelling, fairly epic track. [5:04]
2. Rapid/psychedelic piano melody in beginning and throughout + thumping beat + increasins intensity in vocals/orchestration = glorious. [4:50]
3. Electronica-ish in beginning and background… sounds a little like The Notwist, but with that Devotchka blend of real-life instruments and swollen vocals as well. [4:11]
4. Flamenco-y beginning with handclaps, then distorted guitar comes in and sweeps you away on a string-ful and moody adventure. [4:26]
5. Windy, dissonant interlude w/ sparing strings + accordion. [0:40]
6. Alternatingly moody and sultry, rockin’ song with accordion and a vaguely Spanish feel. [3:45]
7. Sweet, romantic tune with whistling and much tambourine. [3:30]
8. Percussiony interlude [0:24]
9. Classically “Devotchka” track with strumming, brass, and vibratoful vocals. Cheerful. [4:15]
10. Pseudo-Salsa with accordion, lots of snare, lots of emotion. [4:48]
11. Brassy Latin-esque piece, with much accordion. [3:55]
12. Another swirling orchestral piece, this one all instrumental. [4:56]
