LYNNE ARRIALE: Convergence
Motéma, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – As a highly melodic, straightahead player with eclectic tastes, pianist Arriale makes engaging jazz that fits comfortably within the mainstream while subtly pulling it in new directions. She also has a special affinity for pop songs, as seen on five tracks here. It’s a bit hit-and-miss, but well presented, with solid support from her strong, sympathetic quartet.

Lynne Arriale : piano
Bill McHenry : tenor sax
Omer Avital : bass, oud
Anthony Pinciotti : drums

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10

1. 3:44 – upbeat trio, slamming rhythm section: piano moves in gradually
2. 6:31 – strong, rolling tune with a few middle-eastern touches in the melody
3. 4:25 – Beatles classic takes on a soft ballad air, maybe too precious
4. 4:31 – Sting ballad: slow, a bit bluesy with a haunting after-hours feel
5. 5:11 – Blondie hit: starts limp, but cool sax solo finds depth in it
6. 4:05 – strong middle eastern flavor with oud, rides lightly on forceful rhythm
7. 4:41 – oooh… a really compelling ballad with a hint of Spanish mystery
8. 5:21 – Rolling Stones hit: bass makes it exotic, aching piano rhapsodizes
9. 4:33 – Nine Inch Nails tune: low and creeping, sax solo elevates
10. 5:13 – bright uptempo: piano glides on a good groove, then sax pushes it
11. 3:35 – relaxed ballad: gentle sax and lush, tender piano
