Q.E.D.: Yet What Is Any Ocean… Origin, 2010 MODERN JAZZ – Interesting trio from Seattle (vibes/trombone/piano plus various percussion) incorporating a variety of Latin American rhythms into a mostly sunny (but sometimes bittersweet) chamber-jazz sound. It’s a highly appealing combination, and I can’t think of any other group that sounds quite like it. Definitely worth a spin. Ben Thomas : vibes, cajon, bandoneon, percussion Chris Stover : trombone, congas, chekere Alex Chadsey : piano Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 1. 8:36 – warm, upbeat: trombone roams over bright vibes/piano, light percussion 2. 5:27 – sparkling piano leads into a slow conga-led procession, serious flow 3. 4:48 – bright, happy groove: solos skip merrily over light perc & solid piano 4. 5:08 – tango-inflected: slow and melancholy, with bandoneon; tragic touches 5. 6:12 – upbeat, rhythmic: groove pushes forward, familiar melody & good solos 6. 6:27 – slow, sighing melody with bandoneon; the chilly fog lifts in the middle 7. 6:06 – accelerating vibes into highly quirky tune, upbeat but hard to pin down 8. 7:25 – relaxed, bittersweet; piano & vibes breathe together, trombone yearns 9. 6:08 – strong trombone, striding rhythm; gossamer melody floats in the breaks [ Fo ] 02/20/11 | ||
