NOERTKER’S MOXIE: Some Circles
Edgetone, 2010

CHAMBER JAZZ – Local bassist Bill Noertker continues his long-running series inspired by the works of great painters, turning to Kandinsky, Marc, and the “Blue Rider” expressionist movement. Mixing classical, improv and straight jazz, recorded over 10 years of live performances with an ever-changing cast, this is lively, unpredictable, but deeply thoughtful music.

Bill Noertker : bass, wooden flute
Annelise Zamula : tenor sax, flute
Amber Lamprecht : oboe
Jenny Maybee : piano
Jim Peterson, John Vaughn : alto saxes
Dave Mihaly, Dax Compise, Niels Myrner, Jason Levis : drums

All quite good! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12

1. 6:16 – well mannered swoops disintegrate, layered phrases, bird call flute
2. 6:36 – greasy blues: twin sax solos are gritty, with a drunken unsteadiness
3. 4:45 – cool tune! two flutes entwined over a churning, lopsided bass pulse
4. 6:04 – melancholy flute & oboe drift together in an open, abstract space
5. 8:27 – relaxed, circular melodies decay into free-ranging, very quiet improv
6. 2:35 – sweet saxophones weave around each other, understated bass/drums
7. 3:23 – sax/oboe/bass trio improvisation: slow, autumnal harmonies
8. 2:03 – another sax/oboe/bass improvisation: casual conversation, very nice
9. 4:35 – one more sax/oboe/bass improv: birdlike flutters in slowly shifting space
10. 7:02 – quiet bass/drum duo, then a jaunty, walking sax harmony/counterpoint
11. 6:27 – slow, stretched flute/oboe/bass; piano and ambient percussion look on
12. 7:47 – wonderful: calm horns over layered five-beat pulse, 2nd half abstracted
