GUTBUCKET: Flock Cuneiform, 2011 AVANT-JAZZ/ROCK – This hard-hitting collective quartet keeps putting out great music: loud, hard-hitting and devilishly complex with strong doses of math/prog-rock, a bit of metal edge and hints of modern-classical all embroidering the out-jazz core. But hard as they are to categorize, the band has a tight, aggressive sound that should appeal to many KZSU DJs. All instrumental, FCC clean. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 1. 5:59 – uptempo: spiky/bouncy theme, rolling solos, calm crosshatch into noise 2. 4:43 – math-y melody in relaxed flow, hard march, quick scramble, ever-shifting 3. 3:10 – stabbing melody with multiple counterpoints, slashing psych-metal guitar 4. 6:00 – unrelenting knotty staccato: robots beat you into submission, twitchy sax 5. 6:42 – slow droning chord progression, drops to quiet, builds noise, chugs home 6. 5:09 – almost catchy midtempo rock with a futuristic/surf touch, hopping rhythm 7. 5:27 – crunchy: a flood of harsh electronics & prepared guitar, then quiet murk 8. 5:40 – moody: meanders around deep bass core, rising from calm to loud chug 9. 3:00 – starts soft, shifts to chunky, disjointed rhythm, big guitars, wild sax 10. 5:59 – weird fanfare into low creeping tune with angular breakouts, upbeat end 11. 8:30 – oddball twisty percolation; solo sax spin/skronk; then loud ‘n’ lumbering [ Fo ] 04/10/11 |
