ATSUKO HASHIMOTO: Until the Sun Comes Up
Capri, 2011

ORGAN JAZZ – This Hammond B3 whiz from Osaka, Japan comes out swinging, with a joyous sound and a speedy, frictionless solo style that recalls the early giants of her instrument. The trio plays it straight and gets it right: 23-year-old guitarist Graham Dechter gets lots of room and fills it with west coast blues, while veteran drummer Jeff Hamilton balances fire with class. Settles down after the first few tracks, but it’s great fun.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9

1. 6:05 – uptempo, hard swinging standard: guitar runs with it, organ just sings
2. 5:44 – oooh… Hank Mobley soul-jazz: nice ‘n’ bluesy with a marching beat
3. 5:05 – fast standard: this is usually a ballad, but the trio hits it on all cylinders
4. 5:22 – midtempo: Henry Mancini standard meets a sashaying “killer joe” vamp
5. 6:06 – relaxed ballad has a sort of Ray Charles vibe and a touch of country too
6. 6:19 – feel-good blues march for an Osaka jazz club owner, easygoing solos
7. 4:17 – folksong gets a gospel wiggle, a second-line beat, and some happy solos
8. 6:28 – light breezy stroll: playful intro, quirky organ solo, guitar lays back
9. 4:18 – trips lightly, steady swinging in solos, just glides along without a care
10. 5:46 – tiptoe and soft-shoe, with a sing-song melody and comfortable solos
11. 4:56 – Ray Charles hit, maybe played too respectfully… needs more grease
