ALEX PINTO QUARTET: Inner State
Pursuance, 2011
MODERN JAZZ – Debut recording by a 25-year-old globe-trotting guitarist (now based in San Francisco). Although unquestionably a jazz musician, Pinto also has a strong interest in Hindustani music. That’s most obvious in the fusion-oriented track #2, but you can hear a touch of Indian phrasing hiding throughout his solos and peeking around the corners of his compositions. Drummer Jaz Sawyer anchors the band in this solid intro.
Alex Pinto : electric guitar
Jon Armstrong : tenor saxophone
Dave Tranchina : bass
Jaz Sawyer : drums
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7
1. 7:09 – slouching tune, lots of harmonic friction: big guitar tone, solos all around
2. 9:57 – calm: raga drone and jazz balladry trade off, combine, drift back apart
3. 4:25 – nice groove built from parallel lines, close sax/guitar interplay
4. 6:32 – slow alap intro to a soft countrified ballad: sweetly expressive guitar solo
5. 5:41 – quick-paced tune with a squirrelly theme, meandering guitar & sax solos
6. 4:59 – waltzing feel: sax bounces lightly; guitar is angular, building up energy
7. 6:09 – relaxed pulse: cool guitar, acidic sax, great drums, dedicated to CalArts
