REBIRTH BRASS BAND: Rebirth of New Orleans
Basin Street, 2011

NEW ORLEANS – Still going strong after 28 years, this funky brass band parades and parties through good-time grooves that are sure to get your head bobbin’ and your ass shakin’. But there’s something else lurking in here: it’s the hard-edged resilience of a city that’s faced obliteration and survived. Good stuff. Mostly instrumental, all tracks FCC clean.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 7, 11 … also 3, 5, 8, 10

1. 3:38 – happy stompin’ standard with a peppy vocal
2. 4:35 – hot wiggle: great horn riffs, high energy, call & response vocal at end
3. 5:04 – upbeat: great drums and tight horns, funky sax & trumpet solos
4. 3:52 – rolling groove, solid sax & trombone, brief vocal refrain
5. 6:02 – big big marching band sound; good horn solos & tough ensemble
6. 5:51 – soulful groove walks gritty streets, horn dialogue, off-key vocal refrain
7. 4:50 – tough strut with a swaggering vocal chant for the N.O. Saints
8. 4:10 – solid walking groove with bright horns, aggressive vocal chant at end
9. 2:36 – upbeat, rides excellent drums; horns trade off quick breaks
10. 7:08 – warm and upbeat, can’t help smiling/dancing to this one…
11. 4:37 – unstoppable street-party vibe: great call & response chant in middle
