MICHAEL FEINBERG: With Many Hands self-released, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – This is the second CD by bassist Feinberg, who leads a sextet of impressive young players (the oldest is 24-y.o. saxophonist Noah Preminger) through an all-original set. The music is eclectic and a little tricky; there’s an indie-rock aesthetic deep in the folds that becomes prominent in #4, but they also show respect for straight-up bop on #6 & 7. All good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6, 7 1. 7:12 – pensive, relaxed: bare-bones bass, gently lyrical piano & horns, rises up 2. 7:58 – calm but complex spiral: energy rises for cool sax/keyboard/guitar solos 3. 8:51 – teasing tension, then unruffled bass & piano; sax questions & argues 4. 7:09 – angular jazz-rock: sinister bassline, tricky twists, guitar & sax out front 5. 6:04 – slow, moody rumination: bass solo is near monotone, melodic gtr/keys 6. 4:31 – straightahead jazz: swinging rhythm and really good horn dialogue 7. 5:32 – a slippery cool-bop melody, but something more abstract lurks beneath [ Fo ] 04/17/11 |
