Born in Moscow in 1979, Vassily Primakov entered Moscow’s Central Special Music School at age 11 and at 17 enrolled at Julliard in New York, where he studied with pianist, Jerome Lowenthal. In 2007 he was named the Classical Recording Foundation’s “Young Artist of the Year.” Brahms’ Two Chorale Preludes, settings of the chorale, “My heart is filled with longing,” were composed for organ in 1896 and transcribed by virtuoso pianist Ferrucio Busoni. Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy, in four mvmt’s played without pause, is based on a melody taken from his lied, Der Wanderer, written in 1816. The 24 brief pieces of Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album (only three last > 2 minutes) portray childhood innocence, as the titles suggest. Rachmaninoff revised his impassioned 1913 Sonata No. 2 in 1931. Primakov plays the 1931 version, “a very poetic and emotionally raw piece of music.”
