ROBERTO MAGRIS QUINTET: Morgan Rewind, Vol. 1

HARD BOP – Italian pianist Magris pays tribute to legendary trumpeter Lee Morgan with a band anchored by master drummer Tootie Heath (a frequent associate of Morgan in the Philadelphia jazz scene of the 1950s). Production is a bit spotty – 2 & 6 have tiny traces of feedback – but the spirit is there. Most of the tunes are Morgan’s, but Magris channels him nicely in two original numbers (4,9). Pick any track out of the middle.

1. 5:32 – midtempo, very loose feel: swinging trumpet & oblique sax
2. 8:29 – laid-back blues lope: horns drag, piano gets greasy, nice bass too
3. 5:28 – nifty drums and piano support this cool glide
4. 5:56 – snappy stroll: horns and piano get into it over stomping beat
5. 6:41 – famous tune: tripping piano, very nice trumpet, cautious sax
6. 6:55 – tricky hardbop strut: upbeat groove and swinging solos for all
7. 6:12 – funky li’l slide: sax smears it, piano gets bluesy, sweet drum break
8. 6:04 – upbeat and catchy: snazzy drums, pinched trumpet, angular sax
9. 8:21 – nice jamming tune with a warm groove, space to stretch
