JESSICA WILLIAMS TRIO: Freedom Trane
Origin, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – This intoxicating tribute album is evenly balanced between John Coltrane tunes and original compositions that reflect his spiritual depths. Williams, who lived in the Bay Area for many years, remains a prolific force on piano, with a dynamic touch and masterful improvisational style. And after a long string of solo CDs, it’s great to hear her in a trio format again! Highly recommended!

Note: #4 has weird sound glitches; I can’t tell if it’s the recording or just this CD

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7

1. 8:47 – deep, spiritual sound: piano combines thick chords & intricate runs
2. 6:16 – relaxed, kind of bluesy with a very rich but introspective feel
3. 6:09 – heavy, chugging groove, with catchy theme and a driving solo
4. 5:18 – easygoing stroll, bounces along; piano solo gets into tricky knots
5. 6:39 – serene intro, then a laid-back bluesy ballad with bright undercurrents
6. 8:53 – understated and sophisticated, with fine strolling piano & bass solos
7. 8:09 – gorgeous reading of a glorious ballad: tender, aching, lush & lovely
8. 6:46 – meditative solo piano: jewel-like melody sparkles on a soft pillow
