Review by Tyler Haddow 12/8/11 Three discs of absolutely fantastic drone. There is an impressive array of themes here; no two tracks sound alike, which is an admirable achievement for an album like this. Song structures are surprisingly dynamic with organic, imaginative (albeit slow) transformations. There’s a journey to be found in every track. Highly, highly recommended for bladerunnercore fans. Tracks with asterisks stood out to me, but you can’t go wrong. No FCC’s. Play this! ~ DISC 1 ~ 1. (35:40) A multitude of trebly, often dissonant theremin drones wash in and out. Otherwordly, heavily meditative. 2. (16:07) Overlayed ebow guitar drones create deeper and darker mood. The dissonance is constant and overwhelming. 3.**** (21:43) Epic. A far more diverse set of instruments (crazed electric guitar, violin, prepared piano) gives colorful flair to a droney black abyss. Beautifully crafted, dynamic. ~ DISC 2 ~ 1. (1:07) Transistor radio shenanigans. 2.**** (14:53) Atonal computer beeps buzz over brooding tones. Calmly unnerving and subversive. 3.*** (31:22) Slow to develop, but rewarding. Smooth-as-silk modulating drones dissolve into a slow-motion depiction of nanorobot apocalypse. 4. (11:02) Hypnotic, buzzy waves. Fairly straightforward. 5. (2:12) High-pitched synth interplay. Dissonant. ~ DISC 3 ~ DISC 3: 1. (41:05) Warm, dark drones are accompanied by curious trombone wails. Tension mounts. Almost jazzy trombone and keyboard improvisation energizes the second half. |
