THOMAS MARRIOTT: Human Spirit

MODERN BOP – Marriott, a prolific trumpeter out of Seattle with a remarkably pure tone, leads a nifty quartet on this disc. Organist Gary Versace defines the atmosphere, and his playing is imaginative without being too flashy. Mark Taylor’s clear-headed alto sax pairs well with Marriott’s shining trumpet, and Matt Jorgenson’s quick, lighter-than-air drumming keeps the music buoyant. A satisfying straightahead set.

1. 6:00 – burning standard: speedy yet frictionless trumpet, propulsive organ
2. 6:26 – laid-back and exotic: analytical sax, slow trumpet vs restless organ
3. 7:30 – catchy optimism: organ & trumpet solos play it cool, sax has bounce
4. 4:44 – slow Ellington ballad, lovely flugelhorn makes the melody shine
5. 5:12 – very cool: sneaky bass vamp, nifty horn dialogue sits on top
6. 6:11 – catchy, swaying midtempo: glowing trumpet, hopscotch organ & sax
7. 2:56 – quiet ballad: mysterious organ, slooow trumpet, soft drums
8. 4:57 – Miles Davis tune, free-flowing feel, horn dialogue over rhythmic vamp
