JOHN STOWELL & MICHAEL ZILBER: Shot Through with Beauty
Origin, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – The Portland and Bay Area jazz scenes meet up in this light, varied set. Stowell’s ringing, cool-toned guitar sound pairs nicely with Zilber’s warm, modernist sax approach. John Shifflett adds many interesting touches on bass while Jason Lewis’ busy drumming expands to fill in all the spaces. Mostly cozy, but sometimes enigmatic.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6, 8

1. 9:39 – relaxed & lyrical: sax solo adds an angular edge, but guitar chills out
2. 6:38 – surprisingly mellow take on a latin jazz standard, emphasizes melody
3. 5:19 – very loose jamming feel, light-hearted and friendly but oblique
4. 6:22 – open, mysterious intro; becomes a calm ballad for soprano sax
5. 6:54 – subdued, nostalgic: guitar roams, soprano sax reaches, wistful bass
6. 4:47 – twisty, angular sax intro, lightly driving tune with thoughtful guitar
7. 6:41 – improvisational sax/acoustic guitar duet: meanders and hops
8. 10:11 – relaxed, introspective: tender sax grows resolute, serene guitar
9. 7:40 – warm and comforting: bass gets spotlight for a while, sweet solos
10. 1:57 – lyrical solo saxophone postlude
