JOHN BROWN TRIO: Dancing with Duke Brown Boulevard, 2011 MAINSTREAM JAZZ – This is one classy Duke Ellington tribute. Bassist Brown is the leader but the big name is Cyrus Chestnut on piano. The trio runs straight up the middle of the road, emphasizing Duke’s sophisticated charm and timeless melodies. The piano and bass solos shine like polished gems, and everybody sounds so happy! The ballad suite near the end makes a welcome change-up, though. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 7, 10 1. 9:08 – relaxed sashay, cute and friendly, delivered with a nod and a wink 2. 6:20 – happy little sway: starts with a “Peanuts” vibe, but piano solo gets hot 3. 6:11 – upbeat Latin wiggle: playful piano bounces all over the peppy drums 4. 6:50 – light walking groove: sassy piano and chatty bass solo 5. 6:13 – airy, upbeat, glides along on a slick drum groove 6. 6:02 – upbeat and swingin’, cheerful bass solo is the highlight 7. 6:16 – ballad: hushed and smoky, the hazy reflections in a wine glass 8. 6:42 – slow ballad: very soft and romantic, just a hint of the blues 9. 9:20 – ballad: slow, with bowed bass out front and gentle piano 10. 6:21 – sophisticated swinger, everybody gets a little solo space [ Fo ] 06/18/11 | ||
