ANDY AKIHO: No One to Know One

You want something different? Try Andy Akiho, a steel-pan player who defies all labels. This isn’t Caribbean island music, though he’s studied in Trinidad. This is bright, inventive new music in a multitude of hues. Classical? Jazz? Who cares, it’s awesome. Each track has a unique musical palette: strings, vibes, harp all creating textures you’ve never heard before. Akiho also likes to “prepare” his pans, attaching foreign objects to alter the sound. This music is fascinating and alive. You just have to play it.

1. 7:43 – jabbing, darting tune with strings & harp, very quiet middle section
2. 5:11 – amazing spirals! rich and orchestral with vibes, harp, glockenspiel…
3. 6:24 – delicate intro, then (surprise!) a reggae beat; harp & cello soften it
4. 7:28 – dreamy intro, uptempo quartet: pan/cello/bass/drums roll together
5. 4:26 – solo steel pans, walking tempo: melodic patterns interweave
6. 2:35 – trio with bass & drums: sweet and lyrical
7. 7:20 – harrowing, cinematic tension and fear with complex rhythms & layers
8. 4:34 – trio with trumpet & violin: flows briskly with a strange neon glow
9. 6:55 – whoa! fast, sinister clockwork with oblique female vocal, tinkly middle
10. 9:50 – this is a duet?! prepared pan, cello, kick drum, tambourine, loops…
