Radical Dads / “Mega Rama” / Uninhabitable Mansions

Slight lo-fi indie rock sound. Most songs consist of basic uptempo beats with un-cleaned-up electric guitars on top. A lot of vocal and guitar (low chords, higher riffs) layering. Standard soprano indie female voice, except tracks 4 & 6 which have a male lead. Seems like a record that may warrant multiple listens to pick out nuances/general feeling towards the album, as many songs sort of blend into one another. The cohesive sound is pretty good, but there aren’t many standout original melodies.

The group does seem to have a great sense of humor based on the things they write on their website (and the fact that their myspace url name is “newerbetterfathers”).

No FCCs detected. Favorites: 3, 4, 7.

Individual track reviews continued inside.

1. 2:59 Light ooo-ing high harmonies, electric guitars, slight slow/break-down at the end.

2. 4:02 Mid-tempo, basic chords on electric guitar, singer goes pretty high at some parts, but nothing that really stands out.

3. *2:13 High-pitched guitars and high shouted vocals, fast paced, evokes bright lights, running from the cops.

4. *3:38 Tenor male vocals lead, whiny grunge feel to it, but kind of nice, with some interesting chord/melody switches. Reminiscent a bit of Pablo Honey-era Radiohead.

5. 3:44 Some tempo changes 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through, but mostly straight-forward uptempo track. Some airy overlayed vocals over guitars at the end.

6. 2:43 Clean electric guitar strummed, tambourine, vocals spliced – male lead, then male & female conversing with one another. Slight emo sound.

7. *2:34 Overlapping vocals, sometimes slightly off tune oos, many layers towards end (male and female). Fun guitar riff and frenetic vocals, almost yelling at times.

8. 5:24 Beginning sounds (and builds) a bit like Chemical Brothers (“Where do I Begin”) or many Broken Social Scene songs. Ambient guitar sounds layered. Melody doesn’t emerge until around 1:30. Much cleaner/slower sound than other tracks.

9. 3:34 Basic guitar riff with heavier overlay coming in shortly thereafter. Vocals alternate b/w high and low, repetitive melody, but kind of catchy. A fairly strong closer.
