TOM HARRELL: The Time of the Sun
HighNote, 2011

MODERN BOP – Another solid disc from Harrell (Stanford, class of ’69), a fine trumpeter whose compositions might sound simple or retro but are really quite inventive. His solos are economical yet eloquent, and his masterful quintet has all the seamless confidence of a true working band (this is their 4th release together). Some good stuff here.

Tom Harrell : trumpet, flugelhorn
Wayne Escoffery : tenor sax
Danny Grissett : piano, Fender Rhodes
Ugonna Okegwo : bass
Johnathan Blake : drums

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6, 8

1. 5:57 – space tones, then a dragging fusion march based on the number 12
2. 8:41 – a gorgeous spiral pattern, with wondrous trumpet/piano/sax solos
3. 9:02 – spiky bop groove: trumpet/sax surf over funky drums & keys
4. 6:33 – nice chord patterns: melodic bass solo, flugelhorn & piano sing
5. 7:28 – catchy & upbeat with a bit of soul: fluid horn solos ride the groove
6. 7:10 – cool tune with modernized Horace Silver vibe, trumpet & piano shine
7. 5:04 – swift-flowing samba: flugelhorn & Rhodes roll, drums drive
8. 6:28 – bounces on a groovy beat: nice round of solos, Rhodes esp. nice
9. 5:49 – alternates two jabbing riffs: horns roll, then drums take over
