LOUIE BELOGENIS TRIO: Tiresias
Porter, 2011

AVANT-JAZZ – This strong trio comes out of the Albert Ayler school, with Belogenis’ sax making anguished wails and gruff, throaty moans over the incredibly expressive bass of Michael Bisio and the fantastic rising/falling tide of Sunny Murray’s drums. There’s live-wire energy and deep introspection, but well-balanced, levelheaded interplay keeps the music on a fairly even keel. The recording quality is outstanding, with all three musicians sounding perfectly clear and crisp at all times. This CD should appeal to free-jazz and normal-jazz fans alike.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5

1. 6:32 – slow, slumped, but with uncomfortable currents of buzzing tension
2. 6:34 – straightforward start, drums & bass have excellent solos, sax moans
3. 7:58 – sax lament over walking bass, scattered drums; great duo in middle
4. 19:08 – slow wanderings: vaguely ominous at 4-5 mins in, great bass solo at 7-9 mins, soaring sax from 10-14 mins, midtempo trio at the end
5. 5:07 – slow Coltrane: bluesy and spiritual, rises and falls with grace
6. 3:17 – lively pace: sax rolls ‘n’ squeals over walking bass and busy drums
