HARRIS EISENSTADT: Canada Day II Songlines, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – This is the second release by the ‘Canada Day’ quintet led by drummer Harris Eisenstadt. As in their first disc, there’s a lot of friendly interplay and a clean group sound offsetting a general lumpiness in the compositions. The sax and trumpet add a spirit of light-hearted adventure and just a bit of bite against shimmering vibes. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6, maybe 7 or 8 1. 4:39 – happy-go-lucky drums set up a friendly drive; sax wanders 2. 5:08 – relaxed pace, horns stroll together over introspective rhythm section 3. 4:53 – gentle, folksy feel, very warm with some playful interplay 4. 8:11 – rambling, very cool piece: excellent bass & sax solos, gets spacey 5. 5:34 – improvisational intro, then a steady clomping tune, trumpet goes out 6. 6:42 – lively midtempo: sax and vibes bounce off spinning riffs, calms down 7. 8:25 – trumpet goes nuts, sax roams all over, shifts to a curious little ditty 8. 4:32 – slow shuffling start; kicks back with some nice loose soloing [ Fo ] 07/16/11 |
