STEFON HARRIS/DAVID SÁNCHEZ/CHRISTIAN SCOTT: 90 Miles
Concord, 2011

MODERN LATIN JAZZ – Three stars of the modern mainstream head down to Havana, where they team up with two Cuban jazz pianists and their percussion-heavy quartets. It’s a rare example of something that should be happening all the freakin’ time – the mine of jazz in Cuba is deep and rich, and remains ridiculously isolated from the U.S. But the results sparkle: this is bold, appealing music played at a very high level.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6

1. 5:03 – wow… uptempo layered patterns; solos hop over thick bass/perc
2. 4:14 – upbeat glide with a tough edge: brief solos, energetic ending
3. 6:45 – builds up from a lopsided riff, powerful surges, very nice vibes solo
4. 3:52 – delicate vibes play dreamily over a soft sax ballad, calm percussion
5. 6:21 – excellent rolling groove: firm trumpet & vibes solos, great rhythm!
6. 6:28 – stern melody shadowed by scat vocal; piano & trumpet solos dig in
7. 9:28 – hip midtempo: thrusting vibes, sax speeds it up, piano grooves
8. 4:59 – fun, strutting melody: solid trumpet solo, vibes roll with it, neat ending
9. 5:48 – thoughtful melody in a changing setting, serious solos & hard rhythm
