Album Review

Lush guitar-driven drone band from Kansas City, Missouri. Originally a solo project of Dave Williams, Sounding the Deep has since added percussionist Mike Vera to flesh out the rhythm segments. Most production is very loose and spacey, but with lots of warm undertones, and a certain ineffable “spiritual” quality. All very good stuff, highly recommended to those who are fans of Sonic Meditations labelmates Expo 70, Brainworlds, and Plante, as well as other stuff like Earth and Steve Roach.

*1. (4:34) Low-end rumbly drone with gentle slide guitar accents which lend a definite “western” ambiance. Lonely and isolated.
*2. (7:32) Mid grinding drone. Moog stretched to its very limit. Very hymnal in its approach.
*3. (2:22) Unabashed percussion showcase. Heavy pounding drums, maracas and relentless drone. Killer.
4. (7:31) Sluggish and wandering.
5. (4:50) Cool and breezy, with gentle guitar plucking.
*6. (7:06) Gently spiraling guitar chords, a warm bed of synth, and the sound of rainfall running through swollen gutters.
7. (8:00) Dark, frantic and slow-driving with percussion rumbling in the obscurity. 6 minutes in, the piece violently splits in two and releases a euphoric rush of delay-driven guitar, crashing symbols and distorted vocals.
