BRAD SHEPIK QUARTET: Across the Way Songlines, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – Brad Shepik has a great quartet here, with his introspective electric guitar merging with ethereal vibraphone, deep, well-recorded acoustic bass and drumming that seeps into the tunes as well as pushing them forward. It’s a wondrous sound, full of mystery and memory, resonating, rolling and gently sweeping the listener along. Brad Shepik : guitar Tom Beckham : vibraphone Jorge Roeder : bass Mark Guiliana : drums Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 1. 6:54 – gentle yearning over moody guitar pattern; bass solo really sings 2. 7:07 – hopscotch melody roams up & down, speeds & slows; good vibes 3. 8:09 – uptempo jog: guitar & vibes solos unspool over steady, urgent pulse 4. 5:56 – slow and lyrical with meandering chords, gentle vibes & guitar solos 5. 7:08 – upbeat ditty bounces along: an appealing tune, nice solos all around 6. 6:59 – dreamlike spiral: guitar floats into the clouds, vibes are soft & warm 7. 6:57 – uptempo theme, settles down a bit, solos have a gentle sort of drive 8. 4:24 – very deliberate pacing: solos roam thru intriguing chord sequence 9. 6:41 – a bit of funkiness in this midtempo strut; chunky vibes & sassy guitar 10. 4:48 – guitar/vibes duo sets up a breezy jazz waltz; solos have upbeat flair 11. 5:13 – calm melody over train-like rhythmic pulse, drifts into a daydream [ Fo ] 07/31/11 | ||
